THE CLIENT
In 2012, Norwich became England’s first UNESCO City of Literature. And the Norwich Writers’ Centre joined forces with 26Writers to celebrate Norwich’s literary past, present and future.
THE PROJECT
I was one of 26 writers asked to explore one of 26 key figures from Norwich’s literary past and present. I was given the author George Borrow.
THE RESULTS
I visited George Borrow’s house in Norwich and the city where he was once more famous than Dickens… no-one had heard of him.
But George was a fascinating fellow, and I found a lovely group of people who had heard of him in the Borrow Society. I read his books and the Borrow Society journals (some serious research here and huge thanks to Graham York rare books) and visited Norwich to see his house (strangely located in the middle of a new estate) and seek stories and inspiration.
I then produced a 62-word sestude based on different authors with Norwich connections. This was also produced as a map to guide visitors around the city.
