THE CLIENT
First Light is a charity supporting people in Cornwall, Devon and Wiltshire who have been affected by domestic abuse and sexual violence.
THE PROJECT
For people living with experience of domestic abuse or sexual violence, First Light can be the difference between a life lived in fear, and the hope of a brighter future. Their tone of voice – the way they talk to people in written communication – needed to reflect that.
The way we communicate with words creates a picture of who we are, what we do, and who we need to speak to.
The language used by First Light should not make victims of people who have experienced domestic abuse and sexual violence, but rather empower them to get help. To change their circumstances for the better. And it needed do that in plain English that’s as easy to understand as possible.
We completed a review of the charity’s existing communication as well as taking a look at how other similar organisations were using language to connect. We then arranged a workshop with staff from the organisation and created a questionnaire to seek input from service users.
From all this information, we then crafted a new tone of voice for First Light, together with a set of tips and techniques for how to use this new tone.
We then worked with Ridgeline Studios to incorporate this into a full set of Brand Guidelines for the charity.
